BREMERTON — Firefighters rescued a driver Friday whose vehicle slid into the Port Washington Narrows.

A resident on the 3800 block of Tracyton Boulevard in Bremerton heard a crash and reported the car in the water at about 11:40 a.m., according to a Bremerton police release.

The driver, an 18-year-old Bremerton-area woman, was trapped inside the sedan and submerged when responders arrived. Two trained Bremerton Fire Department swimmers entered the water and broke the car’s windows to reach the driver.
The swimmers carried the unconscious woman to shore where fire personnel began CPR. She was transported to Harrison Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not immediately available Friday evening.

Bremerton Fire Capt. John Payne said the woman was trapped underwater for about 20 minutes. The current in the narrows was pulling on the vehicle, which made the rescue more difficult.

Police were investigating the wreck Friday. It did not appear the driver was intoxicated, according to the police release.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the traffic unit at 360-473-5496.
